WELCOME TO THE SKULL INDEX

The Skull Index is a large ongoing collaborative project working with private collectors, institutions, and museums to help catalog and gather data on various vertebrate species. Currently, over 400 species are present in the database. We're very grateful to have a few Museums from across the world interested in the project and allowing our team to gather photos and measurements from their collections in the new year.

Our goal at The Skull Index is to provide public access to educational resources and data on various vertebrate specimens for everyone. From researchers to students and artists, or to people who are simply interested in bones and skulls and just want to look at neat photos or compare skulls against their collection for identification help!

Our UK Team is also aiming to do outreach education throughout the Midlands later this year, so stay tuned for news!

Species are currently organised as:

And then families are listed in alphabetical order. In the future, we aim to have a more accessible database custom search, and ideally re-design the species list. We hope to add extinct species at the end of 2024.

Please note the mobile version of the site is unfinished, and species will not show up in alphabetical order due to the column order in desktop view.
