GET INVOLVED

Skull Index relies on the collaboration of individuals and institutions to help others with skull ID, research, drawing references, or for people who just want to look at cool skulls! With high-quality skull images, locational data, and measurements, we hope this site can be helpful for anyone! If you'd like to submit a species (can be already listed on the site or something we have not got yet!)

There are some small requirements needed for collaboration submissions, which are listed below.

  • In-focus images of the specimen against a background with no other items behind. Lateral, anterior, and superior views. See these images for examples.

  • Skulls need to be ideally complete, natural loss of teeth and minor damage is OK. Pathological skulls are also accepted. For rarer specimens, just the top half of the skull is OK too!

  • Data such as sex, approximate age (if known, or use adult, juvenile, stillborn), locational origin if known.

​

  • Measurements of length, width, height (if known) in cm/mm, and weight in grams. See below for a diagram of the length and width measurements.

  • For crediting, a chosen name, a set of initials - or a social media alias. Each image will be watermarked with your credit format & and the website URL. Anonymous submissions are also accepted.

  • If you need a photo or any content removed at any time, or updated with a higher quality file, contact us.

No black background? No problem! As long as the skull images are reasonably high quality and are against a plain background like a bedsheet, we can edit them to the desired background colour for the Skull Index.
