What does The Skull Index about?
The Skull Index CIC is a registered Community Interest Company and Non-Profit, we became a CIC in May of 2024 (company number 15735006). Collaborating with collectors of natural history specimens, universities, and museums worldwide. We gather photographs, measurements, and informative data on vertebrate specimens to add to a publically accessible database. This database is helpful for artists, teachers, students, or anyone interested in skulls, bones, and teeth!
Mid-2024, we started doing educational outreach talks at local community events, where our volunteers present a table of skulls and other specimens, along with activities for children such as guessing games, colouring sheets, informative booklets, and sensory specimens for people of all ages to touch and feel! We have done a few educational outreach events in the UK so far with the Project Director and the UK volunteers, in 2025 we aim to branch out to get our USA and Canada teams involved in outreach work.
You can see photographs and information about our outreach talks here.
I want to submit by specimens! How do I do this?
Our 'Get Involved' page has all the information about submissions, photo requirements, how to measure the skulls etc. We only ask that the collaborator be over the age of 18 when submitting specimen photos and information. Any questions about the submission process, please email us.
Please ensure the specimens you submit are legal for you to possess. We do not condone the illegal possession of protected species. If you are unsure if your specimen is legal, email us and we can send you resources to your local Environmental Agency or Department of Wildlife.
I found a skull / bone! Can I donate it to you?
We accept donations of physical skulls and specimens! Depending on where you are located, we have volunteers in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Canada who can accept specimens from donors to use for our in-person educational outreach talks. If you want the donated skull added to the database, let us know, and we will be happy to accommodate and credit you as the finder (or as anonymous!). Please make sure the specimens you have are legal to possess. And if in the USA or Canada, is lawful to ship across state and province lines.
We had a lovely lady in Leicestershire, UK, donate a box of skulls found by a now-defunct Archaeological Society to use for our UK talks which was ever so kind!
